Hello!

In the process of removing my palm trees (for one, they were planted literally 2 ft away from my house), I would like to add some more plants in my yard. I'm still debating what I want to plant in it place. Right now, I kind of have a muddy hole and some spindly ferns that are living in pots. I was considering dwarf varieties of crepe myrtles (tonto if I can find a place that carries them), but I'm wondering if a shrub/bush would be appropriate.

That being said...

Please share with me what you like to plant and grow in Houston!

The best plants for your yard depends on the type of soil, amount of sun or shade and many, many other factors. For expert advice 24/7, you can't beat the new edition of "A Garden Book for Houston" that just came out. It's well worth the cost, which isn't more than that of a couple of shrubs. To see what various plants really look like plus info on growing them, visit some of the independently-owned nurseries around town (NOT the ones at the BigBox retailers) and talk to the people who work there. Some nurseries will special-order plants for you if they aren't part of the regular stock.

This isn't quite the thread I thought it would be.

Thank you so much for that info! I'm going to order it.
I live near the Heights, and I've already put in a couple of calls to Buchanan's and Joshua's Native Plants.

I'm really curious about what other people grow. I know it's all a matter of taste and extenuating factors. I just want to hear something else other than sago palm.

Buchanan's is really good. I like Shumard Oaks. I knew when I read this post there would be lots of weed comments.

Joshua's and Buchanan's will not steer you in the wrong direction. Both carry native plants.

Small to large plants/shrubs that have thrived in my garden include Bottle Brush (both Little John and the larger varieties), Pineapple Guava, Indian Hawthorne (boring!), Rosemary, Turk's Cap, Salvias, etc. I could go on and on so I will stop and recommend my bible titled Plants for Texas by Howard Garrett. I would also look at Randy Lemmon's website for plant lists. He is the local Houston guru.

As long as we keep this on legal plants were good to go.

I used to grow tulips, but I think its too hot here.

People who plant tulips in our area buy pre-chilled bulbs and treat them as an annual -- they don't naturalize like they do in cooler parts of the U.S.

Check the Saturday paper. They have 2 Houston garden writers who have lots of experience with what does well in Houston.

Are you looking for a small tree? Shrubs? Try Vitex.
