Wow! In 1985, my family moved into the tucked away community across from the road Lakes of Fondren. It is down North Garden. The neighborhood has garden homes and patio homes that were nice and a pool and community center/HOA. The n'hood was 90+% white, well kept adn soooo quiet. My school sucked (Foerster/ Welch) and we left in 93 because of that. I saw the change almost over a year of that area. I remember my Mom driving out further to go shop, not shop at the Kroger anymore but the Randalls somewhere else. I remember the change of shops along W. Airport and when the gas station was built. Then, we had the first murders at Kitty hawk and the convenience store(then We Got It) and then, all the white just left. I remember the neighborhood literally turning minority fast. Then, I notice the pool was no longer taken care of, and the houses my old friends rented after they moved fell into disrepair. It was sad to watch this area just die. The apartments are the root cause, as I remember not being allowed to associate with those kids at my school who lived in them (99%,lol) I went back in 2003 to visit stubborn neighbos who won't or can't leave, and it was yucky. Even if Frontenac is cheap, and I remember the first time they started building there and turned on the fountains near the neighborhood, I would not want to live holed up and not able to explore my surroundings. Good luck! I will not dare visit that place again in my life, as it is too scary and sad.

Not really. Fondren has NOTHING on Chicago (West side and South Side), New York (S. Bronx, Brooklyn) and Miami (Opa-Locka, Little Haiti) Ghettos. Trust me. Fondren is a walk in the park compared to these city Ghettos. Let's not even talk about Detroit.

Once again. Walking on the sidewalk on Fondren is safer than driving on the freeway in woodlands and sugarlands and pearlands.

who allowed those apartments to be built? I know it was a heavy Jewish area at one time when they left 3rd ward but were they so greedy they actually forgot to think about their long term future and allowed tons of complexes to be be built in their backyards?

Some of those folks have homes they'll never be able to sell for what its worth...the development behind the old Wendy's has some amazing homes custom built...

I know a few officers out there and they'll you alot of the area is more hype than anything...alot of the problems are contained to the apartments as the residents have done a great job in keeping traffic out

I'm out there nearly every weekend and its not what people think as its close to everything and you can get alot of house for the money now

They just opened a new police station in Fondren Southwest. That may help with the area security

Why do you assume it was "greedy Jews" who built all the apartments and/or had the power to control whether they were built in the first place?

Well, yes, but by giving it a standalone building it now has better facilities than the previous location.

My goodness. And they say such nice things about you.

Anyone who has been here more that a week understands that in Houston, developers rule. Especially apartment developers. With the permission of the TDHCA, they can ruin any neighborhood they choose. And they are doing it with tax money. So we are all paying them to depreciate the whole town. Except the part of town where they live.
