A lot of the houses we see have electric cooktop which is not my preference. I'd love to hear some thoughts on this. Thanks!

Just run a new gas line to the area. A plumber can do this, and check all lines for leaks at the same time. You will need a new cooktop or range though. I can't even cook on electric after all these years.

some will already have gas connections under the counters. Take a look when you view the home. That will make things much easier.

Thanks for the feedback. And I agree Easily Amused, I cannot cook on electric and I really love to cook! Will check for the gas connections -- fingers crossed that our current offer will be accepted so we will have an inspection soon!

Can you post when you get an estimate of the cost of the whole business (cooker plus installation)? This is a job I would love to have done but I don't know what it costs. Thanks.

Two things come to mind...

* You need to have gas at the cooktop (duh!). Either already stubbed out and ready to use, or run by a plumber.

Aside: It may not be as easy to run a gas line as you think. It depends on the location in the kitchen of the cooktop, and the closest gas line. If it has to be run thru the walls for any distance, it will require tearing up sheetrock (and repairing and painting etc).

* You need to find a gas cooktop to fit the opening of the electric cooktop. Maybe easy, maybe not. If not, then be prepared to redo your countertop. That could get expensive.

One more thought just occurred to me: Most gas cooktops require a 110/120 outlet. Elec cooktops use 220/240. You will need to have an electrician rewire the outlet to be 110/120.

I want to do the same thing. Have had a very rough quote (when a plumber was here doing something else and I briefly told him what I wanted to do) and he told me it would cost about $4000! The gas water heater is in part of the attic and the gas line to the dryer would be really difficult. The line from the water heater would involve going across the attic (about 15') and down an inside wall. I was stunned at the price. This of course does not include the cost of the range.

I knew someone who did it and complained every day how expensive it was. They had to move /alter a wall and floor and run a new gas line. I think part of the expense was they wanted the gas stove to go to an island. Anyway, I don't remember how much but I want to say the whole thing was over 10k

These numbers are really high. I've done it twice, interior wall. 1,200 + Cooktop. They checked the lines for that too.if it has one of those stupid island cooktops, it will cost a lot more. So 1990's to kill counter top/serving space that way.

Exterior wall, with brick, is where it get's tricky.
