My wife and I are considering renting for a year or two before settling in a neighborhood in Houston. We have 2 year olds and so for a rental we won't be worrying about schools and would actually prefer to be zoned to bad schools so as to not have to pay a premium for schools we won't be using. Being around other families with similar aged kids would be a big plus.

Budget would be about $2200-$2400, and would like a home of 2500 sqft (I have a feeling the sqft requirement might be tough to hit). Definitely do not want shared walls.

I've been told the Heights might be an ideal fit for us but I don't really know much about it. I can't think of any other neighborhoods off hand. Any help would be appreciated.

Normally, bad schools = bad neighborhoods. Are you sure about this?

Well, I know there are neighborhoods in town that parents opt for private schools. I was just wondering if anyone had experience with them. For example, I know people live in the Heights don't like the middle and high but love the neighborhood. Same story for Oak Forest/Garden Oaks. There has to be more pockets like that ITL or close to it.

And it also looks like $2400 isn't even going to get me close to what I want. So let's say the budget was $3000. Does that open up more options?

If you want to stay on the west side:
Lakeside Place, Ashford Forest, Country Village. In 77077, north of Briar Forest south of the bayou. Still can get to park on main streets.

Lakeside Forest and Walnut Bend in 77042. Walnut Bend is full of young families. it's the starter home area for 77079 and 77024 for families with very young children and newly marrieds. Same set up as above. You might be able to find something in Briargrove Park, but your budget will put you south of Briar Forest. still very nice though, tons of kids.

Close in? Probably Oak Forest. I hear the elementary is actually pretty good.

Oak Forest and Garden Oaks. Your budget pushes you out of most good close in neighborhoods. Both those are good school areas that are close. It is the most up and coming area in Houston right now. Bad zoning to schools = bad neighborhoods. I would look at parts of Montrose also.

3000 will open you up to some Galleria ones. Search 77056 Even then you are on a tough budget
