Hello! My family is relocating to Houston in 2 months. We found a rental house in the 77038 zip code that seems promising (big, nice yard, decent commute to downtown). Just wanted to get some feedback on that area. Is it safe for families with young kids? Good schools?

Thanks so much. I appreciate any insight!

Not a good area and not good schools. Good schools, safe, and close to downtown will be expensive. How old are your kids and what is your budget?

$1500 per month and my husband is going to be working downtown. So commute is somewhat of a factor. Kids are small and won't be in elementary school for another year or so ....

We'd love Katy or Pearland or something similar but I heard the traffic out that way is horrible.

Thanks!

You can't really avoid traffic anywhere in Houston. While commute should possibly be a consideration, it shouldn't be the main factor as to where you live, especially if you have a family.

Is 77038 near 77035? I live at 77035 and I love my area. It could be the neighborhood that I am in as it's gated, but it's amazingly safe.

Would have to see a map to see where 77038 is.

Well if schools are not a factor it makes it easier. In general the good safe areas are closer to the 610 Loop and inside. Else you need to look to the suburbs. Pearland is only like a 30min commute depending on traffic. Check Oak Forest and Spring Branch. You might have to up your budget some though. 1500 is what nice one bedroom apartments go for.

Much nicer areas you could live on a $1500/month rent budget.

That is near Greenspoint, a very high crime area. Sometimes folks refer to it as Gunspoint. Get a realtor to help you find a house to rent if you are unfamiliar with Houston.

There are a lot of areas you can rent a small house/condo for that price that's safe and relatively close.Off the top of my head, you can prob find a townhome in 77057, a small older house in 77055. Anyway, it'll be scarce but definitely doable. Work with a rental reator. U can browse through www.har.com
