Is it safe to take Westheimer Rd. all the way from Katy/Cinco Ranch to the Museum District - or would you have to drive through some sketchy areas?

No sketchy areas, but one very very long drive. Why not take the toll road to 59? It would take easily 90 minutes to drive that with all the lights. Traffic in the Galleria area on Westheimer can be brutal

Unless you stop to buy crack, I would say its pretty safe. But seriously there no "sketchy" areas on Westheimer. Westheimer runs through the Westchase District, Galleria Area, Highland Village, Upper Kirby, Monstose, and then turns into Elgin and goes through Midtown. There's only one problem though, is doesn't lead to the Museum district. Now if you want to take the scenic route to the Museum District, exit 610 on to Bissonnet and take all the way though.

ToyYot.....Yes it is a real question, thanks for your help!

Just looking for a possible way to travel without taking the expressways from the Katy area to University of St. Thomas. Not very familiar with the area yet.

Looks like Westheimer wouldn't be the fastest option, but still an option. Prob. 59 or the tollway. Would like to avoid 10 and 610.

When you said "Museum District" I thought you meant over by Hermann Park. If you want to get to St Thomas, just take 59 north, exit Shepard make a left on shepard, make a right on Richmond, make a left on Montrose. Or I guess you could go all the way down Richmond Ave too.

I'm scratching my head too. Are there hidden gangs in the city waiting to ambush drivers who come in from the suburbs?

Some people are scared to drive freeways. I have seen it happen. Though they are actually safer than roads. The tollway to 59 to the downtown spur drops you pretty close to St Thomas. It is about a 45min drive. I am betting no freeways will take two hours.

Like I said....I don't know the area very well yet. Most big cities can have sketchy areas just outside the downtown area - just checking.

Thank you Schumacher and 14 bricks for your helpful information - I appreciate it!

I'm sure I'll get arguments with this, but when I lived off Westheimer and Hwy 6 (hood, only did it for a year), I found that taking Richmond into town was often a little faster. Both back up, but Richmond seemed to have a flow to its traffic and not as much Galleria mess. Plus, inside the loop, Richmond is the bigger roadway. Of course if going during rush hour, both are bad, but at other times I could go a few miles before stopping for a light.

A few times, I took it on Sunday morning and hit no red lights between Hwy 6 and the loop! It was a miracle and I actually called people....
