Hi we just moved into West Univ Place. Since every city has distinct trash collection rules, I was very curious why people are placing trash bags on the sidewalk without garbage cans. In the northeast we would place the bags inside trash cans because leaving them out guarantees some or other critter rummages through. I would think this would be a bigger concern on Houston? Do people store the bags inside garbage cans at least during the week?

West U will not pick up trash in cans. That is why everybody leaves their trash bags out at the curb for the garbage men to pick up. They throw the bags in the truck. I have a trash can inside my garage that I put the bags in on the days that are not pick up days. You can put your trash out at the curb after 6 p.m. the evening before your pick up day. West U provides blue containers for your commingled recycling. Get one at City Hall if you do not have one. Recycling is once a week and trash pick up twice a week.

Thank you Katie Kennedy - your erudite answers have been very helpful for my wife and I through our entire moving and school selection processes!
On an unrelated note do you have a recommendation for a good handyman and an electrician in the West U area?

Southside Place provides heavy duty trash bags. I don't know if West U does as well, but the funny thing is that when the guys pick up the trash, they rip open the bags and separate stuff right then and there. Now I try to separate my trash beforehand to save them a step.

As the initiator of this thread, We LOVE West Univ at least so far. My question was related more to a Northeast expatriates ignorance of how things are done locally than any disparaging concerns.

Oh, by all means please. Ask away! That's what we are here for.

Sadly, once in a while someone new or "new" will start a disparaging thread about locations.

As mentioned above, "collection" will solve the problem.

I have a buddy who has a tear down there for 800K. 800K does not go that far in West U anymore.

Also, West U only takes paper leaf bags. You can get them at Home Depot or Berings. Enjoy the area!

Thank you, and welcome to West U. If you go onto the city web site you can sign up for email alerts about city matters. The City will send an email when the trash collection days change such as holidays etc.

Unfortunately I don't have a handyman or electrician to recommend but would like to see if other posters have any recommendations. I need some minor electrical work to be done also.
