I'm always flip-flopping between the Canary Island Date Palm and the Medjool. The reason why I'm leaning toward Medjools for my yard is because I called The Garden Line and he told me that Medjools are more hardy in the Houston area than the Canary Island Date Palms.

Palms are native to the area...

Two different types actually.

This maybe true however I've personally never seen a dead Canary Island Date in Houston. The frost bitten ones always come back.

Good for her.
You should have dug her up and took her to the Pride parade in Montrose... and then replanted her, of course.

This brings up something very interesting.

People say Houston isn't natural looking with palm trees when there is only one type of palm (California Fan) native to Southern California. Texas has two different types (Texas Sabal & Dwarf Palmetto) of native palm trees.

Date Palm tree is my favorite... just make sure you leave plenty of space when you plant it.

Yes the Medjool is more cold hardy, but darn are they expensive! I literally went to the to get a few for by the pool thinking that that I might spend a few grand total....NOT. They were 3 grand apiece and that wasn't even for my preferred height. I didn't get them. So if you know somewhere with a good price I am all ears.

I would say look on Craigslist, but most of those are dig it up yourself Mexican Fans & Sago Palms nobody wants.

Palms like you're looking for go for a premium.
