My husband and I have been together nearly 18 yrs. and married 13 years. We have no children together. I have 4 children from a previous marriage. I have always thought my children were a part of the family but they were not included in the obituary. .I was told that only "direct descendants " can be mentioned.I am deeply hurt by this decision.Am I wrong?
I am sorry I forgot to mention that this obituary is of my father in law.

I'm so sorry that you were hurt, and rightfully so, by this oversight. As far as I know, ANYONE can be mentioned in an obituary. I've seen stepchildren, former spouses and even friends listed.

I truly hope that whoever wrote the obituary left out your children only because he/she didnt know better. But, in any event, try to let it go and dont let it bother you any more than it already has.

Unfortunately the one who writes the obituary is the one who chooses who is included which usually ends up hurting someone's feelings along the line.

Our family chose many generations ago to list the spouse by name, then their children by name and if there are step children they are included as "children" we do not specifically state they are "step" children. The rest are grouped as siblings, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins etc.

^^^ Yes, anyone can be mentioned, even friends, neighbors and coworkers. I agree, whoever wrote the obituary forgot to include your children. It could be a honest mistake. Maybe this person was misinformed about who can or cannot be included.
