We share one side of fence with one neighbor and now this neighbor wants to change the fence. We agree and would like to share the cost, the problem is that there is one door attached to this side of fence and this door belongs to this neighbor, if you were me, how would you calculate your share of the cost, should we just pay 50% of the total cost or less because there is one door which belongs to the neighbor and she wants to change that door too?
TIA

50/50 if they only want a standard fence now if they want to go with a fancy high priced fence 35% max

I would find out how much the door will cost and subtract that from the cost. Then split it 50/50.

I'm not sure if I understand the part about the door. Is this not a door that allows access between your yard and theirs? Is this door not part of the esthetics of your house? Without further info, I would say 50:50 of a similar fence as the one that exists. Nickeling and diming seems silly to me.

No, that door is the one that allows access to her yard, it has nothing to do with our yard. So basically, that door is her property not ours, not ever share with us.

I think you should only share fence costs on a shared border.

Agreed, you only pay for the section of fence that shares your property line. The contractor should be able to price out each section. You shouldn't have to pay anything for the section facing the street where your neighbor's gate is.

Best Bet..But if you really like ur neighbor and good friends with them - go 50/50 for everything and add a door for you.

I did it in this way, We didn't change it, we extended it.

I didn't realize fence was not on a mutual border. In that case, ditto on what Kreeyax said. Let the contractor break it down for you. He's a neutral 3rd party. Especially if one side of the fence is significantly longer than the other and if you want to be prorating, then let the contractor tally it so that you won't seem petty.

That's what I did. Short after I moved into my home, my neighbor wanted to change the fence between our properties. Although, she didn't asked for me to pitch in, I offered to pay half as a courtesy. Besides, I benefited a new fence as well. I knew the contractor also, so I asked him how much he quoted and paid my share of the cost. Courtesy works both ways and we've been great neighbors since. We help each others out when we can.
