Darn - from the OP comment Macy's site - I was hoping for a new Macy's downtown and not another office tower.

If they get rid of parking lots, it'll force more people to park in the more expensive parking garages that take forever to get out of. Some people like the fast and easy convenience of parking in a lot and getting out.
Macy's was about the convenience and encouraging people to shop Downtown, not for the store's architecture. Might as well tear down the dated old Marshall Fields store on Chicago's State Street or tear down Macy's Herald Square flagship because it is a agglomeration of neighboring buildings evidenced by its uneven floors.

The city needs to loosen the parking capacity restrictions to accommodate density. Downtown's blocks need to be maximized for office space, not for parking lots or garages. The Park-and-Ride buses are much more convenient and it's safer to leave your car behind in suburbia than being a target of a smash-and-grab.

Isn't this new building doing just that? It's more aesthetically pleasing to the eye and it's making use of the space by having retail, restaurants, parking and office spaces all in one.

Where is the new Downtown Macy's store going to be located? From what I've heard, it's just going to be an office building.
