We will be relocating to Houston next year from NYC (my husband in March 2014 and my four children and I in July), and are starting to research neighborhoods. Our first priority is finding a good district for our special needs son, who will be entering 8th grade, so we are interested in good middle schools and high schools since we will be switching just one year after we arrive. We will be looking for contained classroom settings, as he has multiple disabilities (PDD, MR/DD, anxiety/OCD, Sensory issues and global delays). He currently receives OT, PT and Speech, takes life skills classes and has a 1:1 aide, and we're hoping to keep a lot of these services the same. He has no behavioral issues aside from anxiety.

My husband will be working downtown and we'd like to keep the commute around 30 minutes or so. Our budget is 250-500K for a house. We've been drawn to Clear Lake, Friendswood and Pearland because they're all in between Houston and Galveston and seem to have plenty to do nearby too (NASA, nature preserves, animal safari) All three neighborhoods look like they have generally solid schools which will be great for our younger 3 typical children, but I'm finding alarmingly little on the special education programs anywhere.

Advice/input on these areas, as well as anywhere around Houston with great special ed middle/ high school programs would be greatly appreciated as we prepare to move cross-country. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

Pearland has self-contained classrooms at the jr. highs and the high school has a 9th grade center for special needs kids. I do not know too much about them because my grandson is only in 3rd grade and is mainstreamed currently. There is a private school that is new in Pearland for 4th through 12th grade - they use the online k-12 curriculum and they definitely have some services at the school (it is run by two special education teachers and the owner has her own autistic son). Pearland High School does have life skills classes for special education and also offers co-taught classes for students who place in the general education classes. This school is called the Creative Mind Academy and you can call them if you are interested in whether they would meet your needs. Creative Mind Academy

Friendswood is a relatively small district and may not offer too much in the way of services. I am not sure what kinds of classes they offer.

Clear Lake
Jr/Sr High School Staff | School District of Clear Lake

You might be better off contacting each district's special ed department

Thank you so much for the info. Do you know if special ed students are bused to a different school within the district if it better meets their needs or do you have to live in the exact zone for each school? Is the high school or private school the Creative Mind Academy? I'll definitely start getting in touch with various departments and appreciate your response!

I just want to add that just by looking at the links you sent, Pearland offers the most information upfront about their special education options which is encouraging, though we will check into Clear Lake and FW more just to be thorough.
