So we are looking to relocate to the Houston area after the school year and my daughter is very involved in cheerleading here where we live. She's a freshman in high school and she wants to continue cheerleading through high school. She is already not very happy that we are going to be moving out of state when she's in high school but I'm really worried that she won't be able to get into cheerleading in Texas. It appears to be very competitive and she doesn't have all the tumbling skills that a lot of the cheerleaders there appear to have. So what's her chances at making a high school cheerleading squad in Texas? Here they don't do competitions in high school but there are certain places that people can do competative cheer if they want to. Thanks!!

It's very competitive, and most of the girls have been in tumbling and cheer since they were 5-6 years old. If she is passionate about it, I would advise taking as many one on one tumbling coaching sessions as she can do before and after moving here. Lots of girls do competitive cheer instead of being on the high school teams, because there are only a few spots for large campuses.

Most schools that offer cheer, also offer drill team or dance team. There are lots more spots there and that may be a better fit.

My daughters cheer for our Junior and Senior High Schools here. We have been in KatyISD for coming up on 5 years. Send me a PM if you have more questions and I will give you my two cents....

It's competitive in the suburbs, don't know about elsewhere. My children are in all-star cheer but aren't old enough for school cheer yet. We're in Katy ISD, and our gym (Adrenaline) offers workshops and private lessons this time of year to kids going out for school cheer who aren't on competitive teams already. I do know this, here in Katy, junior high is not scored on tumbling whatsoever. In other districts, junior high cheerleaders do tumble. Just the same, there are certain campuses where all the girls are in all-star outside of school, and some where there are only a handful competitive outside of school. I've known girls who have gotten onto the high school squads with no tumbling experience, however their jumps were great as well as motions and everything else. Our high schools don't tend to go to a lot of school competitions like some other districts. Some of the largest all-star programs in the Houston area tend to drive the competitiveness of the surrounding schools.

Just an opinion on that, dance is also very competitive here in Katy. There are large studios with competitive companies and I believe many if not most girls on the dance teams dance outside of school.

It depends on the school. However, competitive cheer gyms are abundant and many have multiple levels requiring different skill levels. School cheer tryouts are generally in the spring, and teams begin practicing then. They generally go to cheer camp in the summer.

I always thought that making a cheer leading squad was more based on popularity.

Oh yes! Texans take cheerleading very seriously. Just check out how Wanda Holloway tried to get her daughter in.

There are high schools which use student voting as part of the tryout but not all. The more athletic teams probably don't.

I don't know how it is outside of Katy ISD, but here the junior high and high school squads are selected by UCA independent judges - not the cheer coaches, teachers or the students.
