What are some of the "better" tennis/pool clubs in the Houston area within 30 minutes of downtown? Availability to courts, group lessons, lap lane pool hours, and examples of membership prices would be helpful to include. Thanks!

Most of these are going to exclusively private, require references, and have waiting lists among the qualified candidates. Usually 65-100k to join and monthly dues of averaging around 6-800.

There are plenty of golf/countryclub/social clubs within 30 MILES that all you have to do is write a check. They are private, but not exclusive. Their intiation and dues will be a fraction of the above. Ie. clubs in SugarLand, Woodlands, Katy and Kingwood.

I believe Royal Oaks would be your closest for the above category. I don't know their membership fees or dues, but it's not exclusive.

The Houstonian is another idea. They have a few different options. Not a cheap intiation fee, but certainly better than the clubs. The Briar Club is closer in, and a similar situation. however I'm not a fan of the club or location as it's really congested.Westside Tennis is very popular, but about 13 miles further out.

The Houstonian offers a lot more than just tennis and a pool. Easilyamused pretty much laid it all out. My sister and her family are a member of a few clubs. I have been to most of them at one time or another.

There are cheaper solutions. The downtown YMCA has a great pool and a masters swimming group. There are tennis courts all over Houston.

Rive Oaks Country Club is probably the closest fancy place to downtown. Though I think it is invite only. Houston Country Club is not too far. Royal Oaks is a long drive.

I would look at the Houston Racquet Club which is fairly close in. Not cheap though. I think my brother in-law is on the board there. They have the most courts I believe along with two big pools.

Good luck

Thanks everyone! I appreciate your input. Does anyone have price information for the Houstonian?

You will have to call them for pricing info. I think it is 15-25K to join plus monthly dues. There also might be a waiting list to join. It is a nice place. I have been there quite a few times with friends or relatives who are members. Though I have not been there in a very long time. The Houston Racquet Club will have similar prices and I am fairly sure a wait list. Good luck!

It is all relative. To some people it is pocket change. It is also a lifestyle thing. You hang out with the club people. There is networking there. That all being said. Yea, it is a lot money and not my thing. Though I know people who are members and that is their thing.

Quite a few companies have memberships - that's how I've got to go there. No interest in spending that kind of money out of my own pocket!

Houstonian will often have "specials" where the joining dues are significantly reduced. The reason they don't post membership and dues information is that everything is negotiable. If you ask, they will give you a day pass to try all their facilities, which are very, very nice.
