Uggh...I see you're in Sparks. As the joke goes "Reno is so close to hell that you can see Sparks." Seriously, though, being in a city where ALL of the tall buildings are hotel/casinos is nothing short of depressing.
I've been looking at Houston for a while, or will consider anyplace in Calif (except the Bay Area because of the $$$) if nothing pans out... and The Woodlands is awfully tempting...I don't have any kids, though. I just like all the brick homes. They remind me of my first home in Atlanta, only better.

The suggestion that children helping each other shows leadership, is a bit thin in my view! Try telling that to the parents of children in one UK school I know of, where my cousin's child spends most of her time looking out of the window whilst the teacher tries to cope with the non-English speakers. And please don't tell me that it would not happen in the USA!

If you avoid diversity with your children, you are purposely hendering their learning experience. ESL has students from Asian, European, American and African countries. Some are exchange students; some are immigrants. The ESL students mix into regular classrooms except for their English class. Many students learn to help the ESL students, but there are some who do not take the opportunity they have to teach either. I find mosre ESL students develop the leadership skills than the non-ESL students because they develop an understanding of what the ESL students are struggling with. Those non-ESL students who are smart enough to catch on to the plight of the ESL students are typically very outstanding students and will be tomorrows leaders. Diversity is required for future leadership. It is required skill today in business. I would hire a person with an understanding of diversity and not hire a person without it. This is definately not a thin area. It is the future of our nation and business community and not only future, but todays emphasis on global trade. I cannot imagine choosing a school because of its lack of diversity. I have raised four children to adulthood and two more are about to join the world of the universities. All are raised with a very broad view of this world and are making the best of it, utilizing their experiences and knowledge in successful careers. I could talk all day on this subject with a tremendous amount of personal experience and successes, but enough today.

OK... also moving out here and am confused - The Woodlands = Conroe school district but Conroe = a different school district? Please help. I can't tell the difference when we're saying "conroe schools" vs. "the woodlands schools". Sorry for my density... THANKS

In my line of work I often have to research the schools in the areas for my clients as well as other things. Moderator cut: real estate agent advertising/soliciting is not allowed Some of the Conroe schools aren't that great, but some of them are absolutely wonderful. You may want to consider Spring as well, the schools are great there and they have wonderful programs. It is also very close to the Woodlands and often more affordable.
Good luck to you on your move!

All the schools in The Woodlands are in the CISD, there is no such thing as The Woodlands ISD... I think where your getting confused is by listening to others talking about the subject, the folks who live in The Woodlands want to "separate" themselves from the stigma that "Conroe Schools" has so they always referr to the schools there as Woodlands Schools...

I think a lot of the reason why people tend to stay away from ESL schools in Houston is because the diversity usually only involves poor hispanics when talking about ESL. I'm vacationing in Sydney, Aust from the Woodlands, right now and your argument definitely applies here, NYC, Vancouver, Melbourne, London etc. And I do agree that it is a good thing. But not in Houston, generally speaking.

I live in Walden(by Grand Harbor & Bentwater) off Lake Conroe and love love love it. So many different houses in this area, new and old, big and small. We moved here in Nov. 07 from Tomball and I have to tell you my son has gone to Tomball since 6th grade and I've not been happy at all with Tomball ISD. But that is just my personal opinion. Also you need to take into consideration travel time for your husband. If you move anywhere to like Glennloch Farms or even Tomball its alot of travel time for him if he is working in Conroe.
I will go shopping in The Woodlands usually on Woodlands Parkway from Gosling down to 2978 area. Lots of houses I see going up in that area too. They are building more shopping strips off 105 also. Heck we just got a new Taco Bell and a Starbucks like a month ago LOL Montgomery/Lake Conroe is catching up
Have you moved to Texas yet Momof3inReno?

In order to be closer to our daughter in The Woodlands, we are coming down to buy a home in the Lake Conroe area. Since we have not been there, we don't know exactly where to start. Can you suggest the areas you like or any builders that make quality homes? It's really going to be hard without knowing the neighborhoods. Are there a lot of retirees, and do they seem to live in certain areas? Thanks for any suggestions.

It depends on your price range, but the nicer subdivisions are
Bentwater, April Sound, Walden, Grand Harbor, Del Lago, Blue Heron Bay, South Shore Estates, Buffalo Springs...I would say you will definitely be able to find something nice in one of those areas that you will be happy with, the subdivision fees vary as well as the tax rates but not much... The first three I mentioned all have amenities such as community pools, parks, fitness clubs, restaurants, churches etc... and have families as well as retirees. Prices vary anywhere from 125K to 2 mil. Hope this helps...
