Clear Channel to begin culling Houston billboards | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle (broken link)

This is absolutely terrible news. I know somewhere in the Houston city charter it says that if you remove the billboards, the city will effectively cease to exist. I for one would not like it here if I could only see one ad for Ron Carter in Alvin on my drives down the Gulf Freeway. I would become downright suicidal.

Even more suicidal than when Clear Channel "culled" KLOL.

Default signs, signs, everywhere signs

Christmas comes early! This is GREAT news for Houston. The drives along portions of freeways like the West Loop in Bellaire/Meyerland and 288 are so much more pleasant thanks to the lack of visual clutter brought about by the proliferation of roadside signage and businesses. Apparently Houston had 10,000 billboards in 1980, now we're down to around 4-5,000. That's progress.

So what's next to go down, the Ritz club, Carmen's boutique and Heartbreakers billboards on the south loop & Gulf freeway?

I could take that comment and go wrong with it in so many ways.

Aw, man, the Gulf Freeway has got to be the absolute WORST when it comes to billboards... headed north or south.

The gulf fwy is great for three things: billboards, strip clubs, and Tex-Mex.

Hey, tstone, you forgot one: furniture stores. You can head down the Gulf Freeway and get your fill of advertising, boobies, lunch, and stop and buy a couch on your way back to the house.
