I would not give up completely on private schools. I have known two families who applied late and were accepted. Even thgough these schoools had long wait list. Typically if a spot opens over the summer they will look at all the candidates and decide who is best to fill the spot. This being said I do think St. Johns and Kinkaid would be out at this stage. Try other ones... ROBS, St. Francis Episcopal, Second Baptist, Awty, St. Annes, Presbytarian. I think the best thig to do is call and speak with the admissions staff and explain your situation. Keep in mind for public schools may are overcrowded and require you to register by a ceratin date (typically mid May). If you do not and the school is overcrowded you will be required to go to another school. Just dont want you to move somewhere and think since it is zoned to a specific school that it is automatic. Last year a family closed on a home in May knowing they wanted their child to attend neighborhood school. They missed the May registartion and were told they had to go to another school. Best of Luck!

Check into Garden Oaks/Oak Forest area. Rentals zoned to Garden Oaks Elem are affordable and GO is an HISD montessori magnet. Oak Forest is a magnet vanguard program but full so you have to be zoned to have a chance and only part of the neighborhood is zoned to OFE. Anyways, if you are moving to Houston it's worth a look and maybe a fair balance between cost of rent and education options. We live in Oak Forest but will move to Garden Oaks cause the lots are bigger and I don't mind the school, but can do private also. We currently are at Esperanza's which is a great prep for HISD Magnet Vanguard or private.
