Why would you even consider La Porte? Why don't you post this on the Houston forum for more response.

Yeah LaPorte is near Houston. You can do worse, but you really need to know what you are getting into. For example cost of living won't be bad but transportation and schools will be problems. It's not a very inspiring city.

Yeah, I guess. There is something to be said for peace and quiet and being one of the safest cities in Texas.

Why does a city need to be inspiring, anyway? I get not striving to be Detroit, but I'll get my inspiration elsewhere.

I'd take La Porte over Austin and its traffic, high cost of living, crime and hipsters, anyday!

Chemical plants? The wind blows from the south most of the year. No problem.

LaPorte is a suburb and would be difficult to get around without a car or at least a bike. Where are you planning to work? It's a smallish little community on the edge of the ship channel. There is a school, and some beaches and parks and stuff. The nearest major city is Houston, a 30 minute drive away. I would count the restaurants I've eaten at as below average, but it has bbq and chinese and seafood, plus your standard chains nearby. Considering how close to water it is, I consider the housing to be cheap. I'm not sure about the crime or anything.

La Porte Website - Transportation

Looks like public transit in La Porte is quite limited. Southeast Texas is quite hot and humid in the summer, so walking anywhere is going to be a sweaty and hot experience.

You also will want to have a vehicle to evacuate in the event of an approaching hurricane.

You cannot live in La Porte without a car and a drivers license. The same goes for almost all of the Houston area. It's not like Austin where you can take the bus wherever you need to go.

Do you have a job lined up there? There's not much reason to move there otherwise.

La Porte has horrible air quality. Houston is bad enough, and La Porte is even worse, and surrounded by chemical plants. It doesn't matter what way the wind blows. There are also chemical plant explosions which occasionally occur.
