Spider plants are hard to kill, and look nice. Those ivys you find in floral departments grow very well if you water them and provide a sizeable container for root growth. Or go to the garden center and look for 'ground cover' plants. There are many, many types of ground cover.
A lot of those look good in pots and a lot are quite resilient.

Your best bet is to take pictures of the containers plus their surrounding areas and make a note of whether they're mainly in sun, shade or a combination. Go to one of the large nurseries in your area (NOT a Bigbox store!), show them your photos, tell them your situation and ask for suggestions. You'll also need advice on potting soil, fertilizer and watering. People who love plants love to share their knowledge with others -- that's how many of us developed a green thumb!

Local nurseries often have websites with coupons, plant information, etc.

Always use clay pots. Check out Buchanan's Native Plants in the Heights.

We've had good success with Foxtail ferns and a high level of neglect.

Without a doubt: foxtail ferns. They look nice, stay green and can cope with varying conditions. Just water them every once in a while.

It may not be an issue for you, but just be aware that the foxtail ferns are toxic for dogs.
