Houston does have zoning. It happens in the engineering firms hired by the CoH planning department.

It is fun to watch the no zoning, property rights advocates heads explode when something happens close to them. Like condos building where some golf course used to be on Cypresswood Dr. or electricity lines in Katy. Everybody wants electricity, they just don't want to see how it gets to their houses.

This is a houstonian mentality right here.

Just take it and deal with it. Someone slap you in the face? Just accept it and deal with it
Someone hit your children? Just accept it and Just deal with it
Your spouse cheat on you? Just accept it and deal with it

No one ever stands up for anything here.
SMH you Houstonians

Out of curiosity…..what specifically are you, yourself, doing to change things? Anything more than poppin' off here?

Houston hasn't had a Conservative mayor in decades, so I'm not quite sure where you're going with that one.

In fact, its quite ironic how Houston's burbs are some of the most well zoned burbs in Texas minus those in D/FW which are sometimes overly zoned to the point of looking like a scene straight out of Edward Scissorhands.

Outside of The City of Houston & Harris County things are pretty orderly looking. Then you hit Beaumont & the havoc starts all over again. I've even encountered terrible zoning in some of Texas' smallest towns. Longview immediately comes to mind. Its like a small version of Houston.

Is this supposed to be a bad thing? I'm not seeing how more organization would make Houston less interesting.

It would definitely make it less unique, not sure about being less interesting.

No zoning is whats helps make Houston so quirky. No other major US cities like it.

Where else can you be in a strip club one minute, then walk across the parking lot & be in a strip club or smoke shop the next?

"Who wants to do that?" is the question you should be asking. There may be pockets of town where the lack of zoning or building codes results in a quirky atmosphere, but in most of city it just creates an ugly atmosphere.

Houston is a poorly planned city and there's really no way around that fact.

I agree 100%

If Houston was planned though, it wouldn't be Houston.

Its not just the strip club scenario either. Things are arguably more accessible with lack of zoning. The lines are so blurred between commercial & residential districts in Houston very few distinguishable districts even exist.

Houston is a strange animal.

People (outsiders) often mistake Houston's lack of zoning as being ghettofied when in reality its just the total opposite from what they're used to seeing/expecting to see in a city.

No where else in the country or World can you find single family homes nestled in the shadows of 30, 40, 50, 60+ story skyscrapers.

On the contrary, you can find that in numerous cities. You've got to get out more.

You don't see this in other cities. You're just being obstinate now.

Common sights in Houston...
