Good evening Houstonians.

I was using the 99 grand Parkway from I-10 going north towards 290 for the first time tonite.

Every time I pass a toll, a light flash, like a photo flash at the rear of my truck.
I saw that several times tonight, including the car in front of me and the car behind

Anyone know what that is?

I do have Ez tag.

EZTags are read by those flat white plastic panels.

Winner!

Here's a pic....sorry I couldn't find a larger image (click on it for a slightly larger image). The pink circle is the EZTag reader. Yellow is the flash/camera system.

I came in here figuring you were going to complain about it, so let me start - I understand what it's doing, but damn it if it isn't blinding when you're driving at night. There are toll plazas all over Houston that don't flash as violently as these do; I notice those are already lit up.

Anyone know why these were built this way? Just to annoy me?

All the newer ones on all the toll roads around here are like that and booths with the old ones seem to be slowly being replaced with these. They are only triggered when a car passes through unlike the old ones that were continuously on. I've never had an issue with them at night.

Ya, it's just taking a picture of your rear plate.
If your tag doesn't register (or you don't have one) they have your plate to look up.
It's weird at first, but I don't find it blinding since it's behind me.
