I will be going to school in Baytown next semester at Lee College and was wondering about the commute to there from Houston? Where do most students live in the Houston area, or what neighborhoods are decently safe? Also, would it be a bad idea to live in Galveston and drive to Baytown everyday for class? I would much rather live in Galveston because of the environment and the people and the beach and yadayadayada. But im not sure in the commute to baytown is worth it

I would think it would get old driving from galveston to baytown everyday. Maybe if you get all your classes on two days of the week.

Gas is relatively cheap right now, but you know that won't last. You may want to consider living close to Baytown and make it less stressful on yourself. Students live all over the area, and it is huge.

I'd live close to school for a few years. Get a place in Baytown.

Most of Lee College's students, due to the community college district, live in Baytown or East and Northeast of Baytown (Mont Belvieu, Dayton, Liberty, etc). Your best options if you stick to being local and close to the school would be somewhere in Baytown, but keep put of the older neighborhoods (South of Tx-146) they aren't always safe after dark.

If living by the water is a must you should probably stick to options along the Bay, but you'll get stuck in tie ups on Tx-146 in Kemah & Seabrook. Always avoid commuting these areas from 4pm-6pm, although normally it only takes 10 minutes to pass through these towns at rush hour it will take about 30 minute(sometimes more).

But overall your search (if you stick with local) will also greatly depend on rent or buy, there are many areas to buy in the baytown area that are extremely desirable, renting in desirable areas is tougher to find.

Kemah or Seabrook, despite some traffic wouldn't be a bad commute to Baytown.

I've looked at renting in Galveston and most of the apartments there are trash, it seems. I suppose that is thanks to a captive market.

You would sincerely hate Galveston on a busy touristy weekend (Bike Rally, etc) where the WiFi is being slowed to a standstill and you have studying to do.

As noted, rush hour traffic from say...Shoreacres to Kemah backs up as the roads slim down for a solid couple of hours.

I like spinning around Galveston, especially when I get paid to do it, but you can probably find silty looking water over in Beach City, I imagine.
