I second the recommendations for the Heights, Washington, Montrose, and Museum District.

Heights: more single family homes, so greater liklihood of yard. The Heights has a great vibe and fun restaurants and bars nearby. My sister rented a two bedroom bungalow with a huge fenced yard and carport for $1250 two years ago. The house was a bit rundown, but she lived between million dollar houses.

Areas close to Rice Village:
I lived in the Southgate neighborhood which is bordered by Rice University on the north and W. Holcomb on the south (zip 77030). It was great to walk to Rice village and then stumble home later.

Montrose: Fun and lively neighborhood! Some areas a bit rough, but seems like that won't bother you. I lived in Montrose during and after college and had a blast. Lots of the townhomes in Montrose have small fenced areas with grass. It is a godsend when you are running late to work and don't have time for a walk.

Good luck!

Best,
Erin

With all of the advice to stay inside the loop, there are areas outside the loop that are of similar vibe, such as the outside part of Woodway, San Felipe, Westheimer, etc. That is because of the proximity to the west loop (some call it Uptown). I really like those stretches of Woodway and San Felipe, they have a class feel, and slightly more suburban look because of Tanglewood further out but plenty of urbanity also. I personally find the intersection of Woodway and Sage the most fascinating area outside the loop from an aesthetic standpoint, near the bayou and Omni hotel, with little hidden neighborhoods around, some of them heavily wooded.

Speaking of the West Loop it is truly mind boggling what is going on there to me, a southern boy. Someone from NYC might not get as excited or impressed by it but man, you've got some amenities there amongst all the cranes. No subway though.

I fell I must warn though, the Texas economy has proven to be cyclical over the decades, I was living in Austin in the 80's and experienced the downturn there, which happened when the 80's Houston bust got added to by some unfortunate Austin economic hits like the closing of Lockheed, Tracor, and serious downsizing of Texas Instruments computer division. So I have seen it up close and we may be on the brink of another one although I'm sure not as deep; still I think there will be layoffs.

Thank you both so much for the information. I have been doing a lot of research on The Heights and Montrose. Yes the yard would be a godsend for those days which I am running late and do not have time for a morning walk or running late with work related stuff.

I haven't looked outside of the loop but will check out those areas so thank you.

My plan is to work for a company for a year or two then move my LLC to Texas. I plan to open a consulting company and work for myself sooner than later. I am very fortunate that our industry is very strong especially with a large portion of the people are of retiring age which opens up many doors for us younger professionals.
