Never understood the lure of Galveston Mardi Gras when you can drive a few hours east and get the real thing in New Orleans.

A few hours drive ? More like at least 6 or 7, besides , there are Mardi Gras Celebrations in Port Arthur , Lake Charles, Mobile , Pensacola and about a dozen other locations, along the Gulf Coast but you pick on only the one in Galveston. More of your anti southeast Texas bias showing through..

I bet there are going to be more people from Austin on Galveston Island this weekend than you would like to admit....

I'd like to go--looks like a lot if fun! FWIW, I've been to Mardi Gras in N.O. quite a few times. And it's too big. You don't walk down the streets there. You are just kinda swept along in an undulating wave of drunken bodies. It lost its charm for me by the time I was in my 30s. . I've always heard about Mobile's celebration. Don't they throw moon pies instead of doubloons?

Lol @ NO being the "real thing" I guess you've never heard of Carnaval in Rio....THAT is the real deal.
All other celebrations around the world are just imitations.

Some of the best Mardi Gras parties are in the medium-small towns near the coast. Port Arthur, Lake Charles, Lafayette...all are a blast.

Lol how slow do you drive that it takes you 6.5 hours to get to New Orleans? Sans traffic it would take me a little more than 4 at the most.

There are all different styles of Mardi Gras festivals and there's a style for everyone. Heck, I took my little grandkids to the one in SHREVEPORT, Louisiana a couple of years ago and they had a blast - it was very family friendly and not super crowded and they got so many beads I was amazed that they could even walk with them around their neck!

Now that you mention family friendly (which is my preference), Port Arthur Mardi Gras used to be family friendly. Port Arthur is dumpy, but the Mardi Gras was wonderful. I preferred it over Galveston.
