The NFL said that NRG Stadium (nee Reliant Stadium) is deficient for a modern Super Bowl, and needs $50 million in upgrades. They said "improvements should be paid for by Harris County". Remember, we (Houston) are hosting the 2017 Super Bowl (Super Bowl LI or SB51).

A few quotes from Peter O'Reilly, NFL Senior VP of Events, who visited this past week, to check on preparations:

"In 2004 and those early years, it might have been right at the top of the league, but there's a drop-off now" (referring to NRG Stadium, which was built in approx 2001)

"Comparable stadiums of this age have been helped by updating suite facilities and club facilities"

"That burden rests with the county, the folks that own the stadium" (referring to who should foot the bill)

"I'm surprised a bit, but there's an opportunity to remedy that" (referring to stadium conditions)

Countering his statements, Edgar Colon, the chair of the Harris County Sports Corp (actual owner of the stadium), said he didn't agree the county is responsible for every improvement. "Some of those may be the responsibility of the county, and some may not."

This was a front page article in the Chronicle on Friday (yesterday). Here's a link

After reading the article it appears that many of these improvements were part of the Superbowl bid. $5 mil for Wi-Fi upgrades wow ! I thought the new digital scoreboards were what was necessary to land this Superbowl, I wasn't aware that there were $50 mil in additional improvements that were being contractually agreed to, were any of you ? If it's in the contract I guess we have to pony up the dough. And of course to ever get another Superbowl bid we will have to build another billion dollar stadium in about 10 years or so...

If the NFL/super bowl needs upgrades then let them pay for it. Or make bob McNair flip the bill, since his team benefits the most.

What are the benefits of hosting a Super Bowl (or any national event) again?

One would think whoever is making money off having the Super Bowl here should be the ones paying for the upgrades.

Stadium owner and Mcnair should put $1.00 from every ticket, beer, soda, food, team store sales, etc etc and put it towards the upgrades needed by the NFL (which is ridiculuos anyway). That should put a nice dent in it !!!!

But on the other hand, like someone else previously said, Kim and kanye can stay the f*** home
