I'd heard downtown's come around pretty well there.

And yes, crime does follow people. That's why it's been rising in the suburbs as the population has shifted outward.

I walk around Detroit every day and work downtown. It's not that bad. I am moving to Houston in July or August though, and I am TOTALLY PSYCHED! I get laid off alot in the Detroit are due to budget cutbacks, so it's hard to stay in a nice job more than 2 years.

Default Original Poster is clueless...

My parents were born and raised in Detroit. I was born and raised about 30 minutes west of Detroit. Downtown Detroit is very comparable to other downtown's. You have some of the greatest sports teams and all but the Pistons are located downtown. There's greektown, the casinos, great restaurants, the autoshow, beautiful artwork and museums, some nice music halls, fun cruises on the Detroit River... all downtown. Yes the mayor is ridiculous, but there are plenty in the city working hard to continually improve the downtown experience. Crime is a problem in every major city. Yes Detroit often has higher crime rates, but it generally stays out of the downtown area. I've walked around downtown Detroit hundreds of times and NEVER witnessed a criminal act let alone a shooting. I'm not saying the downtown is 100% safe, but it's no more dangerous than the downtown of any other major US city.

As for segregation... yes, the city of Detroit is mostly African-American and there are some suburbs that are mostly white. However, there are plenty of diverse suburbs. Come out to Ypsilanti where I was born and raised and you see a very integrated city. Then next door in Ann Arbor, where I went to college at UofMichigan, you have probably the most diverse and liberal city in the midwest.

So the weather in Michigan often sucks, but living in Houston isn't anything special. It's 90+ degrees with ridiculous humidity about 100 days a year... you get maybe 5-10 days like that a year in Michigan. You don't get any snow, which some may like but I think most would miss. And one of the biggest things you miss out on in Houston is the fall colors and that perfect football weather you get in the midwest during September and October.

Every big city has their pros and cons. To put a one-word label (like "ghetto") on any one city is very misguided.

Corruption, are you really from Brightmoor? you and I know that it's one of the most dangerous neighborhood in Detroit so count your blessings because I know a couple of cats over there that died in 1999 and 2004. It's nothing nice over there. Do you know Anthony Nixon bka Chip? He's a Latin Count.

I agree with you LostInHouston. I was born and raised in Texas, but did live 1 year in Gibralter, MI (just south of Detroit.) I loved it there! The changing seasons, getting to play in the snow, going to the casinos downtown. I visited Detroit several times and never encountered any problems. The weather here sucks compared to there. I can't stand how hot and humid it is here ALL the time. My husband and I are trying to move back up north someday soon so we can escape the heat. I'm not trying to offend anyone, this is just my personal opinion.

Why would I lie about that? Of course I'm from Brightmoor...and when I grew up in it, it wasn't dangerous, and never has been. I don't count myself lucky about anything. I had nothing to fear. And I don't know an Anthony Nixon. What street did he stay on? I grew up on Greydale between Keeler and Midland.

Obviously, some of these people are blind! Crime is all that the news IS here and the stats don't lie. As far as dogging Houston, just take a look at it...worst air pollution in the US, the heat is oppressive, there is not much natural beauty here and what little night life there is, shuts down early.

I am still trying to figure out why this town wasn't built at the water on the mainland headed to Galveston.

Sorry. I HAVE to be here or I'd head back to the cooler climes where there are trees, real water, hills and mountains, and a change of seasons.

I thnik you have to realise that many Texans that move to Houston for jobs are from very small quite towns in rural areas. Houston seems like just another dirty big city to them. Its not like the northeast where my peole are from tho;if they visted there they would know why its's called the rustbelt.

This is why.

And I find the trees and greenery here rather beautiful and natural, actually.

That is my situation also. My husband is in the oil/pipeline field and Houston seems to be the hot-spot for that. Otherwise, I would be enjoying the cool summers and snow-filled winters up north!
