I've seen a number of threads discussing pros and cons of various neighborhoods with decent comute times to the Medical Center. Haven't seen a thread specific to someone with a large family however. We'd be looking for a 5 bdrm house in the ~$250-350K range. With a pool would be nice (or else with access to a nice community pool).

We have kids ages 3, 5, 11, 13 and 16. Would want safe, friendly public schools with good college prep track records, good instrumental music programs (including marching band) and decent boys and girls soccer programs.

We like the homes further out (i.e. The Woodlands or Humble/Kingwood) but the commute seems too long. Bellaire and West U are nice but appear to be too pricey. Suggestions on more affordable, family friendly neighborhoods and/or schools to consider?

For the medical center I would go somewhere like Sugarland, Pearland or Friendswood. You are not going to come close to getting the scale house you want for that price in West U or Bellaire. All the other factors could be satisfied in Meyerland, except I seriously doubt you could find the size you want for $350,000. Pearland would be the closest, I believe, of the more suburban choices.

The only way you get what you want at that price is to be out in the 'burbs. Thus, buy yourself a car with an interior that you like a lot, 'cause you going to spend lots of time in it...

People in Houston, who have kids and don't want to commute, live in smaller/older houses for location and good public schools. (If they can afford over a million dollar home, they buy rebuilds on old lots, and even those city McMansions usually only have 4 bedrooms.)If they have more than three kids, the children share rooms. Most older houses that fit the bill I just described don't even start untill 400k if they don't need major work.
You are definately looking at the burbs and THE drive.
