I have observed that most of the new Houston residents are from small towns/cities in Texas or from other Southern states (usually the economically laggard Deep South states of LA, MS, and AL). The California/Yankee migration has stopped, compared to the torrents 5-10 years ago from those places.

We aren't seeing that at all where I am, we're still getting tons of wannabe hippies from CA and WA who are trying to escape.

Houston needs to address this growing population with a more systematic metro rail line. It's gotten too big to rely on freeways.

Am I the only one that think the article's use of the word "torrid" is funny?

I actually have to agree with you. Complete wrong word choice.

tor·rid
ˈtôrəd,ˈtärəd/
adjective
adjective: torrid
  1. 1.
    very hot and dry.
"the torrid heat of the afternoon"
synonyms:hot, dry, scorching, searing, blazing, blistering, sweltering, burning, sultry; Moreinformalboiling (hot), baking (hot), sizzling
    "a torrid summer"

    antonyms:cold, wet

  2. 2.
    full of difficulty or tribulation.
"Wall Street is in for a torrid time in the next few weeks"

Torrid can describe Houston in the summer.

Sure, but it doesn't describe the growth of Houston. "Houston metro area continues torrid growth!" is pretty wrong in all aspects of English. Maybe rapid as an alternative word choice?
