I'm actually very, VERY upset about leaving, as is my 14 yr old, since Science and Engineering is the best school for him; there is nothing like it in Houston. We attended the open house last week and it's amazing!...kids are prepared for their junior year of college by the time they graduate. And excellent school sets a path for your kids.
We are still applying to schools here in DISD; just in case something happens to my husband's job (one never knows for sure, right?). If I were you, I'd still apply to the magnets in HISD. They won't look at your app until June 2nd, but you may have a chance. I've called enough schools to know that they do not make allowances for families relocating. It's such a bummer!! |

Yes - the elementary schools on the K Vanguard Magnet application are:
Askew Carrillo DeZavala Herod Oak Forest Pleasantville River Oaks TH Rogers Roosevelt Travis Windsor Village I went through greatschools.net and looked at every school and the comments. From there, I chose (you have to give them 3 choices): 1. TH Rogers 2. Travis 3. Herod |

TH Rodgers would be the best choice out of those three IMHO.

Travis is pretty awesome though. Have you seen that school? She'd be a better fit there, too. It draws the Heights/Montrose parents crowd a bit more than TH Rogers, IME. Herod is a good choice, too. I think she's Jewish and there are lots of Jewish kids there, as well as others, because of the location. Bit more suburban in culture though. It's hard to go wrong with Vanguard. Well, hard, but not impossible...

I just want to say FELICIDADES to you for wanting your children to be bilingual. I currently live and teach in South America and plan on moving to Houston in the next year. I cannot WAIT to be able to use the Spanish I have worked so hard to learn for the last 3 years. I wish I had had the opportunity to have learned it when I was young like your children!!
This not only will give them a huge advantage in their education and their career, but also will create a sense of open-mindedness and tolerance, and a rich cultural experience for them that will give them the ability to relate to and understand other cultures. Latin culture is so vibrant and beautiful, and parents like you will create a new generation of children who hopefully are free of prejudice and will not make uneducated, ignorant assumptions that so many adults in America currently make about Latinos...especially Latinos who have not yet had the opportunity to learn English. Who knows...maybe I will be their teacher when they get to high school!! (or their principal...working on that degree now) Good luck! (**And yes, I do hope that one of the earlier responders to your post reads this....shame on you...and learn how to spell the word PUBLIC) |
