Interracial Couples in Woodlands?
My Husband just moved here from Miami and right now we are staying in a small town, but are planning to move soon... possibly to The Woodlands. I was wondering if anyone could give me their opinion on how it would be there for interracial couples (I am white & he is black), or any neighborhoods or other areas you might recommend. I am pregnant, so we want to raise our child in a safe environment...the most accepting one as possible. Any feedback would be helpful!

I'm in real estate & I once showed an inter-racial couple out there although I normally never go out there. People were often home when we would arrive & nobody acted weird or put-off or anything. So if you like the area there isn't anything radically wrong with it in that respect.
On the flip side, the Woodlands is NOT what I would describe as a diverse, liberal or even progressive area. It is very beautiful, but also very "Stepford." Its not like someone is going to burn a cross in your yard, but I think there are areas that are more comfortable with diversity, IMO. Sugarland immediately comes to mind.

I have to agree with the second post. I currently live in The Woodlands and I love it! It's safe, gorgeous, tons of things to do, family oriented, etc. The only problem you could face is that it's not diverse at all! If you want more diversity I would move somewhere else. The other response was very PC, but living here I can really tell you some neighbors will definitely turn heads.
Perfect example would be my gym, I think I have seen 2-3 blacks at the most since I joined. I would say in percentages in The Woodlands is probably around 95% white and the rest 5% all other races. Good luck finding your future home.

They don't call it "The Whitelands" for nothing.

Would certain light skinned minorities such as light Hispanics or East Asians more accepted?

YES! Totally. Other minorities are better accepted. There are some wealthy mexicans that have summer homes or live there and are very well accepted, as well as some asians. Our neighbors are mexicans with light skin and have been accepted just like anybody else.

Wow, sounds like the early 20th century to me in the statement that "other races would be more accepted" and that being fair skinned helps. One should not have to compromise their racial identity to fit in, especially in 2007.

I believe Amanda's response means that discrimination is mainly toward blacks.
In addition, statistics shows that the lighter Mexicans are usually the wealthier ones in Mexicao. East Asians (Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans), as a group are among the most educated and successful (if not THE most) groups. Experience and common sense tells us that the wealthy and educated are much less likely to break in, rob, kill, etc.
Even if that's the case, wouldn't wealthy blacks who can afford to live in good neighborhood be treated the same as others? Is it becaue that neighbors might be afraid that their relatives, in-laws, or friends might move in as well?

I'm of the opinion that people don't give a rat's ass what color you are as long as you share similar standards, values and culture (ie. educational background, professional background, religious, etc).
Calls of "racism" are simply a distraction that people use to excuse their behavior. White people who wear hip-hop clothing and don't have jobs are every bit as unsavory as anyone else who follows that cultural phenomenon.

What's wrong with wearing hip hop clothing on one's free time such as during weekends as long as it's not being worn during work hours or other professional settings? Would you opininon change if it was a cow boy hat instead?
Your notion of discriminatory perception based on appearances including clothing is closely analogous to the perception based on skin color.
