In a current thread, I once again brought up the traffic situation around West Lake Houston going north from Beltway 8.

This made me take a look at a map to see what roads may go through in the future which then let me to:

http://www.houstontx.gov/planning/mo.../08_Rankin.pdf

This is a document from 2013 discussing the designation of Rankin Road as it goes from Woodland Hills Dr to West Lake Houston - Project Lucy.

The important things I took from this are:

1. Woodland Hills Dr. will connect Beltway 8 to 1960.
2. Timber Forest will connect to West Lake Houston allowing a more direct route into Eagle Springs from Beltway 8 while relieving traffic from that point north on West Lake Houston.
3. Greens Rd will run West to East connecting Woodland Hills and Timber Forest (possibly making it to West Lake Houston in the future).
4. Rankin will run West to East connecting Woodland Hills, Timber Forest, Kings Park and West Lake Houston.

The bottom line is that West Lake Houston will be getting much needed relief. The questions are:
How soon?
Will it be enough?

The big hurdle for Timber Forest is it will have to go over the train tracks. Not sure who owns the land. But the new middle school and elementary school in the Groves will be placed at the main road through the Groves and TImber Forest. The middle school is slated to be opened in 2017. So I'm going to bet that Timber Forest will start being done sooner rather than later.

Then there's Woodland Hills. The Groves will go all the way over that direction. The Groves is slated to be a 7-8 year project. I would hazard to guess that's about when they will work on Woodland Hills.

The sooner, the better. We built in Water's Edge last year, and I've already noticed traffic is becoming worse and worse on West Lake Houston. Once Timber Forest connects down to Summerwood, it will definitely help with Eagle Springs traffic. With that being said, we still have the Groves(2200 homes), Stillwater(191 homes), Lakewood Pines(300, or maybe 1000 if KB purchases the additional 250 acres) all on West Lake Houston. This doesn't even account for the additional 150-200 homes remaining to be built in Water's Edge... Almost scary to think what traffic will look like in a few years.

While certainly a good thoroughfare grid should be built in the northeast sector, is there reason to think that somehow suburban northeast Houston will be subject to any less congestion than what is experienced in most of the rest of the suburban parts of the region?

Don't get me wrong, there will be traffic during rush hours, but I don't think it's going to be crazy once Woodland Hills goes from Beltway 8 to 1960 along with the new East/West connections (in addition to Timber Forest of course).

Keep in mind there is also plenty of room to expand West Lake Houston to six lanes. The big problem will be the bridge over the railroad tracks of course.

No stopping growing pains.

Yes, because we drive through there.

FMC technologies alone will be bringing 1800-3700 people to Generation Park over the next 2 years. Not everyone wants to live in Katy, Sugar Land or The Woodlands.

What are they doing in the median on West Lake Houston Parkway? It looks like they are doing some construction in the middle.

It appears as though they are FPVC, which, from my understanding, can be used to carry waste water, power lines, etc.
