I have a friend that lives in Perth and he was just telling me that it reminds him of San Diego and San Francisco.
Based on that.... I don't think Houston is much like Perth

That's odd, I've been to Perth but not the other two. Perth reminded me of Calgary except with beaches instead of mountains.

And except for some interesting SE Asian cuisine, the food is no good.

There's more to a state than just it's economy. IMO, our states make their mark based on culture/history/society/diversity and with that there ain't no way this is even remotely correct

I wish someone would make a map based on what I said. With that I could do some good switching around.

I was a Political Science major in college and I remember taking a course on State political history, and the course focused on exactly the issues you mention above. So many of the differences that exist even today can be directly tied back to how and when a particular state was founded, by whom, and who its initial population was. The belief that the U.S. is all homogeneous now and everyone is pretty much the same is not entirely true. The things people believe in Massachusetts versus Texas versus Arizona are real differences and a lot of it can be traced back 100-200 years. Many of these differences persist despite the fact that people often move from state to state, because eventually people self select into a location where their beliefs are shared.
