Greetings friendly people of Houston !

- I have been offered a job in Houston and scheduled to move around the October time frame.
- My wife and I are in our early 30's - no kids yet.
- She does not have any job at hand at this point but will start looking out maybe after a month of relocating.

I need some help with the following :

1. Jobs : My wife is an MBA in the field of Human Resources with over 7 years of experience. How easy or difficult would it be for her to get a job here ? Remember, all her experience is in an Indian context. No exposure to US labour laws.

2. Pay : We were doing really well here in India with our combined salary of over 50K USD. But now that it will suddenly become a single source of income, we are a touch concerned about how much the pay check stretches here. I will be making a little over 100K and have no idea how far the dollar stretches in Houston.

3. Stay : I will be working around NW Houston (near Vintage Park) and would prefer to rent nearby. But concerned about my wife's commute as and when she starts working. She is not comfortable driving long hours/miles. So I may need to move depending on her work location. Do I face fines if I break a rental lease midway.

4. Recreation : We are not much into pub hopping / dining out. But more of outdoorsy road trippin folks. What weekend destination options do we have in a 500 mile radius from Houston ?

Thanks in advance for all the help. Promise to keep buggin y'all in days to come.

For your wife - will she be coming with the proper visa in order to work? Thats what she'd need and experience in a global company with excellent english skills to get a good job in HR. Could still be hard for her to work

100k is a good family salary in houston but not lavish. Much easier without kids and still living in nice areas with things to do. 100k in US is much different than 50 k in india. A nanny, cook, maid etc are harder to come by, and more expensive. Most people I know dont have these services even when making more than 100k.

Within 500 miles are some great outdoor activities. Extend it a bit further and you can get mini canyons in west texas to the true hill country and fall colors of north west Arkansas.

Thanks Testmo !

Yes, she will be coming under L2 visa - so work permit is not a problem. Of the 7 years she has spent 3 years running the HR function of the Indian operations for 1st Financial Bank, USA. I believe its a student credit union based out of North Dakota. Will this help ?
