I would like to build an attached (to my house) patio cover in my back yard (not a deck, just a patio cover). I live on the east side of the 77084 area code, with a Houston address. Do I need to obtain a permit with Harris County or the City of Houston? I have already filed for an "accessory building" permit through the Harris County online permitting system ($30), but I'm not sure if it was the correct thing to do.
Also, where can I get copies of the construction regulations? I am looking to see if I can use some alternative means of attaching a ledger to my house such as the Stratton Bracket, Maine Deck Bracket, or the Attach-A-Deck device. Who do I call/email to see if these would be an approved means of installing the ledger board? Also, I understand the important of a secure ledger board, and I'm just doing due diligence on these products, so no flaming please.

You can have a Houston address and not live inside the city limits. Go to
Harris County Appraisal District and look up your address. If Houston shows up as a taxing entity, you are inside the City of Houston, and need to get a permit from the City.
