Our house faces due west, and I'm looking to add a couple of shade trees to offer some relief from the afternoon sun. We should have planted the day after we closed 15 years ago, but we kept planning on moving every other year, and it just never happened. Anyhow, can someone recommend a nursery and/or installer? I would also welcome suggestions on tree varieties. I was considering these:

Drummond Red Maple
Red Oak
Montezuma Cypress
Bald Cypress

Thanks

Definitely check out Buchanan's Native Plants in the Heights. Very knowledgeable. Don't buy trees from big box stores or Houston Garden Center.

Arbor Gate in Tomball and Cornelius off Voss Rd. are two of my local favorites as well. Tremendously helpful and knowledgable staff.

I love red oaks.

The one question I have is what you value more, a tree that will take longer to grow and fill out but last a lifetime or a tree that will fill in fast but may only go 10 or 15 years?

sugargenius, you live in my area. I highly recommend you visit RCW at the beltway and 249. They have specialized in trees for over thirty years and will help you choose the exact right one for your situation. We used their consultant Tammy who visited our home and followed up with a list of appropriate trees with pics and information for each. They really know their stuff.

Thanks, I've heard good things about them. That's who I am going to check out first. Not sure what time of the years is best for planting, but I'm sure they can advise.

I like to plant trees in Fall. They are getting ready go dormant, but their roots will still grow.

I always use root stimulator when I plant them.
