Hi, I've been looking for this info but can't find really an answer. I just moved to Houston from Argentina. I have no car. My Argentina's driver's license has expired 2 months ago. I need to get my Texas's driver license but I understand I need bring my own car to the test site. So my questions are:

1) How can a person with no car, take the test?

2) If I get somebody to rent me a car, I can I go to the test site, driving this rented card despite I have no license?

I'm in a catch 22 situation, help!

Things may have changed, but when I took my test in 2002, I used a car from a local driving school. They showed up at my house an hour before the test, and we practiced on the way over, then the instructor got out, and the guy from the DMV got in. So I would inquire with a driving school.

I never took a driving test. I did some kind of teach yourself packet where you logged your practice times and then turned it in. After that I took a short multiple choice test and that was it. I was a teenager at the time but this option might be available for others too. Something to look into.

I did my test in a rental car but I did have a valid foreign license.
I agree to contact a local driving school.

Could a friends with a car take you to the test, and allow you to use their vehicle?

Thanks for your comments. I think I would need to check on the driving school. No friends here yet. Also I wonder if Uber would take me there and lend me their car!

As a ex part time driver myself I will tell you that there's no chance in hell a driver is going to let you use their car. Especially with no license. The insurance complications already have drivers nervous just driving passengers around. Zero drivers would go for this unless you offered a fat wad of money. Honestly I wouldn't even ask as you will undoubtedly be rated a 1.

How much money are you willing to give if someone lets you use their vehicle?

Would you be willing to obtain a learners permit first? With a permit you are legal to drive with a licensed driver in the car.
