Default Moving to Houston In March

I have lived in New York, Chicago, LA, and Miami.

I am moving to Houston for work.
I have visited Houston a few times, and it reminds me a bit of LA without the mountains and snobs.

For those who live in Houston, would you recommend anyone to move to your city? Are you proud of Houston? What makes Houston so special? Any recommendations on things to do on my days off that may be fun and interesting in Houston? But will I regret moving there?

I would to hear from folks who live in Houston and would appreciate any feedback or comments that you may find useful to me.

I greatly appreciate it!

John H.

John,

How's it going buddy? I saw your post and I thought I would mention that you should consider Sugar Land, TX. It's rated the 3rd best city to live in by CNN MONEY/FORBES and has some of the best schools, hospitals, shopping, and best realestate for the buck in the nation! Moderator cut: advertising

I've lived in several states (CA, OK, OH, MS, & TX). Once you've tasted the food here in Texas, nowhere else will do! So many restaurants, so little time! The Tex-Mex & BBQ are especially wonderful.

Be careful to become aware of commute times whenever you are looking at areas to live. Depending on where you work\live, commutes can be pretty time consuming.

Other than that, housing in Houston is great. Cost of living will be exponentially lower than the places you've lived prior so you should enjoy either a better home or more disposable income. As a poster mentioned above, the food in H-town is incredible. If you can, try Mark's and Taste of Texas (prime rib). Love those two restaurants. If you're single, the women in H-town are second to NONE! I'll leave it at that. Great hospitals, great theatres, great art\music, etc. You'll have plenty to do here...

Depends on what you like but I definitely recommend Houston. As mentioned above, Houston has great restaurants, museums, plenty of out doors stuff to do such as parks, lakes, and sports. Houston is also great for shopping. Let me know what you are interested in and what part of town you will be staying at and I can help recommend some interesting things to do during your visit.

Just live close to work and the town will do its magic on you.

Your background sounds like mine -- I have lived in Houston, Phoenix, NYC, Chicago, Alexandria VA, and Miami ... and then back to the Houston outskirts (Galveston TX.)

Houston has a lot going for it. Museums, music, culture, sports, restaurants, shopping, tremendous sense of self and pride, and your money goes farther here than it does in a lot of other cities. Bonus: Austin is an easy drive. Biggest drawbacks: Sprawl, oppressive summer humidity, the whole Texas Pride thing (you either love it or hate it), lack of distinct seasons, and isolation (you can drive for hours and hours and still be in ... you guessed it, TX.)

I grew up here, left, explorred the US, then moved back after meeting my husband. It's not a bad place, it sometimes gets a bad rap, but esp. if it is new to you and you have a job lned up, you can certainly find your niche here. It is not where I want to end up permanently, but I can understand why so many do. Give it a try ~ pick up a copy of the Houston Press, explore, keep an open mind. H-town is an inclusive city that really does offer something for everyone. And I agree w/the poster who said to live close to work ~ that will definately enhance your Houston experience. Best of luck to ya!
