Hi, in preparation of taking care of elderly family members, I'd like to convert my downstairs half bath to a full bath which will take some space from the adjacent pantry. Therefore, the total square footage will not change. Has anybody done such a project in Sugar Land ? In NYC where I'm from, you needed to file for permit, submit architect plans and submit for a change in Certificate of Occupancy. If anybody has undertook such a project, would you mind sharing your experience. Thank you.

I don't know anybody that file permits for kitchen/bathroom remodels in a single family home (at least not in Sugar Land).

Hire a general contractor and they should handle everything.

Bad advice. Get permits if required. Home insurance won't cover any non-permitted work if something should happen.

Check with whatever board manages zoning in your area (city? county?). It doesn't hurt to do some research. Unscrupulous contractors may lie to you about the need for a permit, and selling your home is troublesome if you did work that required a permit but didn't get one. It is worth it to you to find out for sure.
