I'd recommend getting a room at the Hilton Americas downtown, next to Discovery Green. You'd be across the street from Discovery Green park and from the George R. Brown Convention Center, which always has events going on during the weekends.

As far as transportation, there are bike share stations right across the street (one at Discovery Green and one at the convention center), as well as light rail stations several blocks away which can take you to nightlife hotspots like the speakeasies at Market Square (I'd recommend you check out Prohibition Supperclub and try to catch a burlesque show) or to the party bars in Midtown. Uber is also around and is fantastic, while downtown cabs are only $6 a ride as long as your destination is within the downtown district. The Greenlink bus is also an option if you're here during the weekdays. Here's more info on transportation options: Downtown Houston

There are several bars within walking distance from the Hilton if you don't feel like partying, like Hearsay on the Green, Reserve 101, House of Blues (which also has shows everday, so check their schedule), or Pete's Dueling Piano Bar. If you guys are more into sports bars then I suggest making a quick trip across the freeway to check out Little Woodrow's and Lucky's Pub across from the soccer stadium on the east side.

You'll find several great restaurants in the vicinity as well like Guadalajara (Tex-Mex), Andalucia (tapas), and MKT Bar (American). If you're looking for Texas BBQ then I'd suggest getting a cab or Uber and making your way to Jackson Street Barbecue across from the baseball stadium (Minute Maid Park). If you're more the adventurous type then you can also check out the Houston Food Truck Park nearby.

As far as free events, check out the Houston on the Cheap website for listings on what's going on that week. There will be plenty going on now that summer's over and the weather is turning nice. Hope that helps!

If the travel dates include Nov 17th, Hilton Americas is probably sold out. A friend tried to book a room that night and was told it was sold out.

Downtown will be really fun! there are many areas to walk to and enjoy. They have a cab special if you stay Downtown. I think it is under $10 to go anywhere Downtown and that includes The original Ninfa's. Discovery Green has markets and activities most weekends. Market Square has lots of good dining and fun bars. The block of 300 Main has several fun craft cocktail bars. Greenstreet has the dueling pianos, lucky strike,House of Blues and a few shops and good dining. That may be the weekend for the Viva Colori festival and what those people can do with chalk is amazing. Hope you have fun! You don't need a car if your just going Downtown!
