Hi - I am looking to take a 2-3 day trip to Houston and was wondering what are some most popular things to do in and around Houston with 2 middle school kids with us.

Thanks

Houston Musuem of Natural Science is incredible. Easy to spend a day there, esp. if you go see an IMAX movie. Of course great art museums. A fave is the Menil, but if you want more traditional MFA is great. Ice skating at the Galleria.

What do you like to do? What things would your kids be interested in? What part of town will you be staying?

There are hundreds of things to do in greater Houston (which is huge). & dozens of things to stop at or see on the trip over & back.

Are you taking 71 or 290?

SE of Houston is the Johnson Space Center and Kemah where you can choose from several restaurants with docks on the edge of the bay where you can watch boats go from the marinas, in and out to Trinity Bay.

My kids LOVE going to Houston! The Museum district is great -- Science Museum is always a must and the zoo (right next to each other) and then art museums nearby. My kids love Asian food, so we always do a lot of eating in Houston, mainly Thai, Vietnamese, and Chinese. They are masters of Urban Spoon and Yelp so they get to pick what they think looks best.

Different Strokes for us.

- NASA - JSC (over Art Museums); Galveston (over Kemah); Korean & Tex/Mex (over Viet & Chinese.....although I do love that Chinese restaurant complex over on Bellaire & the West Belt). The Montrose Area, River Oaks & the Heights areas are worth driving around thru

And Beck's Prime (for Burgers), Goode Co (for a different & delicious take on BBQ) & 2 Dozen different Mexican Meat Markets where you can buy 18 different kinds of Tacos.

Some Old School (but goodies) restaurants: Churascos (Americas), Hickory Hollow, Marini's, Ninfa's, Brennans....dozens of others.

Also on your drive....Kolaches in Ellinger (and also in Chappell Hill).... & La Grange, Fayetteville or Brenham for pleasant towns to stop in.

& lots of malls & stuff....for those who think that shopping is a form of recreation.

Houston Children's Museum definitely, though your kids may be too old.

Houston has a LOT of nice things to do. Galleria area is nice.

In addition to the above, we spent many happy hours wandering around the Houston Arboretum. It's like a piece of wild woods, complete with a swamp, lots of animals, etc, right in the middle of Houston.

If you like churches, there is a massive and beautiful church on Sage road/Woodway drive.

If you are coming this weekend I suggest the Viva La colori festival. Its free and very cool. Kids will find the chalk art amazing. Plus Discovery Green has their discovery flea and the ice rink might open. Drive them by the beer can house for a smile.
Buffalo Bayou park has kayak and bike rentals and boat rides.
The zoo and Herman Park are fun too.
