I have the torx head set to take the screws out, remove the platters, then smash them with a hammer. Running a grinder across the platters will also suffice. The best part is you end up with a collection of strong rare earth magnets

you guys are kinda paranoid. What kind of data is on these drives that someone would dig them out of a landfill and run advanced recovery techniques on them?

Banking, proprietary information, personal information that can be used for identity theft, love emails from an illicit tryst, you name it, somebody will be looking for it. Think about this - even though facebook is free, it is an absolute goldmine for people who buy/sell personal data (the legal kind generally not used for identity theft). They use analytical techniques to divine your personal habits and likes/dislikes and make $$$ selling this info. A skilled hacker would not need to use these analytical techniques on your personal hard drive. Your data is in plain view.
