If you want to be near the coast, you could always look south to Angleton/Lake Jackson area. The commute would be much better than Galveston, and it is a nice area to live. Lived in LJ for 11 years, and it was a great place for my family. We used to pack up the fishing rods after work (I worked in Houston), and drive down to the jetties on Freeport beach. We could get a good hour or two of fishing in during the long summer days.

I agree with the other posters who advise against living so far away from Sugarland -- you'll end up spendind a lot of time in traffic and commuting. Even Clear Lake is a bit far. I understand your wanting to be near the water though -- I wanted that too but ended up in Katy and it is a long drive to get to the beaches (we opted for better school district.)

If you do end up near Lake Jackson, just south of Lake Jackson is Surfside Beach. What I like about Surfside Beach is that you can drive your car right onto the beach so you don't have to lug all of your stuff -- makes it a lot easier when you have kids.

Good luck with your move.

Houston is a large city. I live in Sugar Land, my parents live in Kingwood and my sister lives in League City (off of I45 towards Galveston). It is 55 miles from my front door to my parents, and takes over an hour to get there with no traffic. It is 47 miles for us to travel to League City. Conroe has trees and a lake, but again you are looking at a humongous commute.

The biggest problem with Clear Lake to Sugar Land is the traffic you'll deal with getting past I-45 from Clear Lake City. After you past I-45, things get better (unless you use FM 518 through Pearland, then traffic is a pain as you try to get past SH 288.

In other words, even with Clear Lake, expect at least an hour in one direction during rush hour.

Traffic on I-45 from Clear Lake just isn't that bad - at least when compared to other cities. You could also take BW-8 and definitely want an EZ-Tag if it is a daily commute. Other than paying tolls - the ride won't be that bad at all from CL to Sugarland on the Beltway. Clear Lake also has a great school district as well -- anything in Clear Creek ISD is good.

Hey Thanks. I will probably now look at Lake Jackson. Was thinking of living in Kingwood on the lake and commuting to Sugarland each day to work. I am betting with your comments that is a stupid idea.

Just now reading your question - Sorry! I worked at the Pennzoil Building in downtown, and I would leave my home at 6:45 am and arrive between 7:40 and 8:00. That was over 10 years ago, though, and a lot has changed traffic-wise. Timing was everything. If I left at 7:00, I would not get to work until 8:30. Sugarland would not be nearly as bad because it is on the south side of town. Also, consider Angleton. It puts you about 10 to 15 miles north of Lake Jackson. You would cut your daily commute, and you could still make it to the beach in about 15/20 minutes.
