My son will need the use of a car for ten weeks from late May to the beginning of August. It's a judicial internship. Renting would be VERY expensive because he is under 25 years old (23). I think about $5000. We live in NY. Some people have suggested buying an old used car and then selling before he leaves. The cost would be maintenance, insurance, and the difference in the buy and sell prices. It's also risky to buy a car without even seeing it and testing it out. But it certainly would be significantly less expensive than renting, despite the hassle involved.
The problem is how do we confidently buy a car in Houston when we're in NY? (and it has to be ready for him the day he gets there)

uber.

Where is his clerkship? $200 a month for parking may need to be in the budget.

Finding housing on the Metro Rail line may be the best bet if he'll be working downtown.

Confidently, you can buy through a dealer which costs more but you know who to chase down if there are issues . You can also look online for auto repair shops or auto body shops and ask if they have any cars for rent or sale - many of these places fix cars up and resell them. I sometimes get sent abroad for long term assignments, and I look up car rental places on Yelp and I'll negotiate a long term rate well below the quotes online. If you go the rental route, you'll want to avoid the ones near airports as their rates are usually much higher. Find car rentals places near collision centers as they have agents experienced with negotiating rental prices.

What is your budget if you don't want to spend $5000 for 10 weeks? use existing car or buy the car wherever you are and ask him to drive it down or better yet get it shipped.

If you can find and take over an end of lease vehicle it might be doable but it's gonna be tough to find one.

The only way you won't lose a few grand buying and selling is if you have access to wholesale auctions or buy and sell private party paying a fair price

if you buy through a dealer you're already out a few grand, hence defeating the purpose of your foray
