My husband I and recently purchased a new house in the 5th ward. We have been renting inside the loop for over 4 years. We came across these new home which are very reasonably priced considering they are in the 5th ward. We drove several times through the area, both during the day and at night. I'm not going to lie it's a little "different" than what we are use to, but it seems several new homes are being built around the area. What are your thoughts on the development on the 5th Ward? We decided to buy as we were tired of renting, but also think its a good investment in the future. Seems to us the area can either stay the same or get better, hopefully not any worse.

You have to hope the housing market keeps pushing, the reason the house was cheaper is because of the area.

How is the Bloody Nickel "different" Than what you're used to? It's ok, you can shoot it straight here.

What do you mean by Bloody Nickel? Is that the nickname of this area? By "different" I mean we are coming from growing up in the suburbs, to renting inside the loop in developed areas where we feel safe walking or biking out after dark. Driving through this area I wouldn't feel safe walking or biking after dark.

Surprised you feel safe doing so in the daylight hours as well.

My thoughts are that I can't imagine living somewhere that I didn't feel safe walking around after dark. However, I also realize that the majority of Americans don't live the same way I do. So I guess my opinion doesn't really matter.

This sounds little weird. So you already bought the house and now are looking for some kind of approval on the forum? I don't really know how your area looks, but if you work within Houston city limits, this is really convenient location that is close to everything. I don't know how much did you pay for the house, but probably it was a good deal. So enjoy your house...

The 5th Ward is much less violent than it used to be, and the southwest corner of it south of I-10 just east of Jensen is becoming dominated by affordable townhouses. However, the rest of the area is moderate, low and very low income, so don't expect retail amenities for middle-class households to show up in any great numbers soon. The KBR tract south of Clinton and the MDI site between Gregg and Hirsch will go a ways toward a critical mass of middle-class households once they are fully developed, assuming they go residential, but that's going to take a long time.
