I have been trying to find review sites and found aptratings but they usually only have the bad places posted. From my readings on this site Kingwood would be the ideal place for cost and commute to downtown? Does the houston metro reach there? Any sites to look at? Any help appreciated.

If you're a new grad working Downtown, you should live inside the loop and enjoy what the city has to offer. A very popular place for new college grads and young professionals in Houston is the Midtown area. Plenty of options around there for you to check out.

I was thinking that but the apts are old and have problems. Plus, I rather have a quieter/secure place than a short commute time.

I lived at the AMLI Midtown, and never really had a problem with noise. I lived there for 4 or 5 years. The Apartments in Midtown are all new. Most are 5 years old or less.

Yes, Metro runs along US 59. There is a Park N Ride at Beltway 8, one at Townsend (just north of 1960) and one in Kingwood.

I drive US 59 every day and it is far less congested than the other Houston freeways. In fact, I think the only bad traffic on 59 is right at the kingwood exit. You might want to come in just a bit and look at the 1960 and 59 area. Your commute to downtown from there should be less than 30 min.

But I should add the other poster is correct. Lots of nice new apts in Midtown. That's where I would live if I were young, single and worked downtown.
