Hi all,

I am looking for a house in Houston but I am having hard time deciding where to look for.

First of all, I work in downtown and my wife works in galleria area. Our budget is 250K - 300K.

It seems like if I want newer house with good school zone that is within our budget, Katy is the way to go.
Downside to that is our commute will be insane. It will at least take an hour and half for me to get to work.

Memorial area is pretty much out of my budget unless I find one of those super old 2bd town homes which I am not interested in.

Can anyone recommend me place where commute is not crazy as Katy and has newer houses with good schools? Or is this impossible unless I move up my budget?

Thank you.

I don't know why anyone would ever live in Katy if they work in town but that's just me.

Katy is probably the worst location for you.

Unless you arrive/leave work at off-peak times, let's assume an average of 1h15min each way.
This means you spend 1.6 workdays in your car, each week!

Change your criteria, you might be able to find a nice renovated ranch home in Westbury for that price range.

Trulia has a really neat feature; the Commute Heat Map, where you can overlay commute time to properties within your financial range. Select a few acceptable one, and correlate it with crime heat map, and reduce your selection until you have a handful. Success!

Thank you RandomStorm. That feature is very helpful. I will check it out.

Look for a place on the east side of Katy (Green Trails area). Commute via the Addicks Park and Ride. It'll still be a long commute, but you can zone out and relax on the ride.

Jersey Village, 77064 or western 77040 inside the beltway. Some very nice neighborhoods tucked in there in a good location with good schools.
