Shell to end longtime sponsorship with Houston Open
Shell Oil Co. has decided not to extend its title sponsorship of the Houston Open after next year.

The tournament director for the Shell Houston Open said Wednesday the decision was based on the company's business environment. Parent company Royal Dutch Shell PLC has cut more than 10,000 jobs around the world over the last two years during a downturn in the energy business.

It definitely would not make sense to cut that many jobs and continue to sponsor the event.

The needs they have, versus cutting the excess can be two different things. They have to determine what is essential. And they still are a very large operation...

Id be willing to bet a large part of those they are not really hiring for and just doing that to make themselves look better.

How much you wanna bet? I worked at Shell for 4.5 years... doesn't make me an expert, but I understand how things flow...

Was likely the worst week of the year to host a tournament. Many a big name golfer skipped it to get ready for the Masters the following week.

Maybe Exxon will step in and ante up for the Houston Open. One thing for sure is they will find another sponsor before Shells obligation expires..

I think they'll get another sponsor but I seriously doubt it will be an oil and gas company. They are all cutting unnecessary expenses And that Houston open would be frivolous for them.

I'd much rather see the SHO sponsorship go bye-bye than Shell's sponsorship of Jazzfest in New Orleans. Jazzfest is way more worth the sponsorship than a golf tourney.

Hope whomever the HGA selects as the new title sponsor starts with an "S"...that way at least the "SHO" will continue ;-)
