Thanks for all the input! So, Sugar Land will be near the top of our list...except, reading other posts, we're now very curious about Memorial Bend. We love neighborhoods with that type - and older architecture, the shorter commute into downtown would be nice, and the better school district is also tempting (for the future). I'm not too concerned about being in the racial minority, I just wanted to avoid blatant hostility. Any comments for that about Memorial Bend? And, thanks again.

Memorial Bend/Memorial Plaza and the areas around it are full with people who are very comfortable with themselves. I do think Memorial Bend/Memorial Plaza has attracted more of a mixed culture than other areas of 77024 & 77079. Therefore, I don't think you will have any problems. BUT, the homes there start at around 300k (in desperate need of remodel) and up.
In general "old" Houston his too polite and mannered to be "blantantly hostile" to anyone.

There are some excellent schools in Sugar Land (I like to read the parent reviews at GreatSchools.net).

Regarding diversity, Sugar Land was named a "Community of Respect" by the Anti-Defamation League. See:

City of Sugar Land Articles

I don't know how much a proclamation such as this makes a difference at the individual or family level but it does seem like an extra commitment on the part of the city to be inclusive and welcoming. Although I noted that the accompanying picture features three men who seem more homogenous than diverse!
