I am moving to Houston this summer with my husband and soon-to-be kindergartener. I have a house budget of $500,000-$600,000. My office is right down town, but my husband will be working in Spring.

What neighborhoods should I check out? I would like to live within a 25 minute commute to downtown, but north-ish for my husband's reverse commute. We would love a free-standing home (doesn't have to be huge) in a safe neighborhood with a good public elementary. A neighborhood park and pool would be a huge plus.

What neighborhoods should we check out? We're moving from Austin and really loved it there.

You can get a lot of house for that kind of money in the Heights. That's where I'd start looking.

If you don't need much square footage you can probably find something zoned to Oak Forest Elem.

Your budget will not get you very far in the Heights if you want a free standing home zoned to Harvard elementary.

Try Oak Forest elementary. You can get an older home.

If you want something larger and newer, Fall Creek would work, but the commute will be longer than 25 minutes.

The Heights has a very similar vibe to Austin and you can easily bike commute to Downtown from there. 600k will be a smaller, older house, but that's part of the charm of living in the area.

Hi Belinda - I used to live in Austin as well and loved it. Which area in Austin do you live right now? that you like so I can tell you more or less which ones maybe similar.

You preferably have to stay in the north central side of town. Depending of where on Spring (if Spring is an option) the commute is around 30 minutes with ok traffic without considering any accidents or traffic jams.

Make sure you check the crime stats for those areas mentioned near 610, they are not good.

Fall Creek is good and Summerwood might be ok as well.

anywhere in houston, eh....

When did paying a small fortune for a small old home become charming?
