In preparation for 'the big move' from UK to US we went round the house yesterday cataloguing all our electrical items - what would work in the US, what needed replacing and what we could live without - chcocolate fountain anyone?

Seems I can buy most items from amazon.com, frys, sears or walmart. But can anyone recommend where to go for adapters for the items that need them and also somewhere that would change the 'internal transformer' on hubby's hi-fi. He loves it and won't accept that he might have to buy a new one.

Thanks guys - 3 months and counting....

No not his tv - he wants to change the power transformer inside his stereo/cd player from 240v to 110v and change the plug so that it will work in the US.

As for the tv he plans to buy the biggest, flattest, shiniest one he can lay his hands on (boys and their toys )

Fry's in-store has all the little electronic parts you can imagine for the DIY crowd, all the way down to parts for your own breadboard. You might be able to find what you're looking for there, then DIY or take it somewhere to have it converted.

Hi ChocolateBabz, hubby from the UK too. Please don't bother with bringing over your electrical. They are very cheap over here and we bought most of our stuf from Costco.

check the back of the appliance, many these days are dual voltage or auto voltage.
if you really want to bring those over, our typical electrical outlet for the clotheswasher and dryer is 230v. that might work if you wire it all over your house.
our house in asia has 110v, 220v and vacuum outlets :\

To answer your question, there are several good electrical stores that should provide you with what you need. Fry's was mentioned and you might also try Radio Shack. But just to educate yourself on what and why it's needed, take a look at the link below.
